Best Currency Exchange in Chiang Mai (2026): 5 Trusted Places with Good Rates
Planning a trip to Chiang Mai and wondering where to exchange money at a good rate? I live here, and I visited and compared several exchange shops myself. This guide shows 5 trusted currency exchange places in Chiang Mai, with opening hours, closed days and map links. As of June 2026.
Quick answer: For the best rates, go to SK Exchange or Super Rich on a weekday. Staying inside the old city? Try Super Money Chiangmai. Arriving late at night? Go to Nakhonping Exchange, open until 10 PM every day.
Do you need cash in Chiang Mai?
Yes. Cash is still very useful in Chiang Mai.
Many mid-size to large shops and hotels accept credit cards, but not all of them do. Local food stalls, small restaurants and night markets usually take cash only.
You may have heard that Thailand is full of QR code payments. That is true, but you need a Thai bank account to use them. Most visitors do not have one, so cash is your best friend.
One more tip: large notes like 1,000 baht can be hard to use at small stalls, because they often have no change. When you exchange money, ask for some 20-baht and 100-baht notes too.
5 best currency exchange places in Chiang Mai
Rates are not the same everywhere in the city. These five places are the ones I check often and recommend.
1. SK Exchange (สากลการค้า)

A local favorite for good, steady rates
Chiang Mai locals trust this shop for its rates. It is not in the middle of the tourist area, but the rates stay good.
- Opening hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Closed: Sunday
- Google Maps: SK Exchange (สากลการค้า)
2. Mr. Pierre Money Exchange

Easy to visit while sightseeing — on Tha Phae Road
This is one of the most popular exchange shops for tourists. It is on Tha Phae Road, the main street of the old city, so it is very easy to reach. It is often busy, but the staff are quick and the line moves fast.
- Opening hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Closed: Sunday
- Google Maps: Mr. Pierre Money Exchange
3. Super Money Chiangmai

Best if you stay inside the old city
If your hotel is inside the old city moat, this is the easiest place with a good rate. It is also open every day, which is great for travelers.
- Opening hours: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM
- Closed: Open every day
- Google Maps: Super Money Chiangmai (ซุปเปอร์ มันนี่)
4. Super Rich Chiang Mai
A famous Thai exchange chain, with a branch in Chiang Mai
Super Rich is known all over Thailand for good rates, so you can exchange with confidence. It is closed on weekends, so go on a weekday during the day.
- Opening hours: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM
- Closed: Saturday and Sunday
- Google Maps: Super Rich Chiang Mai
5. Nakhonping Exchange
Open until 10 PM — good for late arrivals
Landed in the evening and the other shops are already closed? This is your rescue. It is open until 10 PM, every day, and still gives a good rate late at night.
- Opening hours: 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM
- Closed: Open every day

Which exchange place should you choose?
Five places can be a lot to choose from. Pick the one that fits where you stay and when you arrive.
| Your situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Staying inside the old city (moat area) | Super Money Chiangmai |
| Want the best, steadiest rate | SK Exchange or Super Rich |
| Arriving late at night | Nakhonping Exchange |
| Sightseeing in the old city and want to exchange on the way | Mr. Pierre Money Exchange |
In general, SK Exchange and Super Rich give the most stable rates, so they are good for changing a larger amount. Both are closed on weekends (Super Rich) or Sundays (SK Exchange), so plan around your schedule.
Bonus: Where to exchange money at Chiang Mai Airport
Sometimes you only need a little cash for the taxi to the city. For that, I recommend the Bangkok Bank exchange counter, right after the international arrivals exit, on the right-hand side.

The rate is lower than the city shops above, of course. But among the exchange counters inside the airport, this one had the best rate when I checked. So exchange only what you need at the airport, and do the rest in the city.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to exchange money in Chiang Mai?
SK Exchange and Super Rich usually give the best and steadiest rates. Super Money Chiangmai is the easiest inside the old city, and Nakhonping Exchange is best late at night.
Which exchange shop in Chiang Mai is open late?
Nakhonping Exchange is open until 10 PM every day.
Are the exchange rates at Chiang Mai Airport good?
They are lower than the exchange shops in the city. If you must change money at the airport, use the Bangkok Bank counter after the international arrivals exit, and change only a small amount.

I hope this helps you start your Chiang Mai trip smoothly. With some cash in your pocket, enjoy street food and the local markets!
