The Village and Your Host
Location
About 1.5 hours by car from Chiang Mai, the Karen village lies on the way to Doi Inthanon.

Your Host: Yatee
Yatee, a Karen woman, is at the heart of welcoming our guests. She studied at university in Chiang Mai and now lives in the village where she grew up, raising two children.
She shows you the real, everyday life of the village — not a tourist show — and welcomes guests with natural kindness. She has even traveled to Hokkaido to introduce Karen food culture.

The F family
Tasting wild fruit on our walk, cooking, making bracelets — every activity left an impression. Learning by doing was especially fun, and we had a very full day.

I got to spend time with a village family and experience a life very different from Japan. The smiles of the kind villagers gave me energy and comfort. Five stars!

Touching the rich life of the Karen, surrounded by nature, made me feel I could have more room in my own heart. Mountains, rivers, rice fields — the village scenery is wonderful.

Walking through Yatee's fields and picking ingredients and herbs ourselves was fresh and fun. In the dyeing workshop we started by crushing the dye — not knowing how it would turn out was exciting.

- Sneakers (recommended for village walks)
- Personal medicine
- Light clothes for the herbal sauna, sandals and a toothbrush (overnight guests)

Important Notes & FAQ
Getting to the village / motion sickness
The village is about 1.5 hours from Chiang Mai, half of it on winding mountain roads. We carry motion sickness medicine, but please bring your own if needed.
What happens if it rains?
Light rain: the program continues with care. Heavy rain: we wait for it to stop and switch to indoor activities.
Are there insects or animals?
Pigs, chickens and dogs roam the village. They don't attack, but let us know in advance if you are uncomfortable with animals. Being near the forest, there are insects and lizards (mosquito nets are provided). In the rainy season, leeches live in the rice fields, so long socks and long pants are recommended.
Will it be cold?
The village is about 1,000 m above sea level and cooler than Chiang Mai in the mornings and evenings. From November to February, bring warm clothes; in other seasons, a light long-sleeved top.
Will I share a room? (overnight)
You may share a room with other guests. If you prefer a private room, please tell us in advance.
Is there internet or phone signal?
Mobile signal is weak in parts of the village. Enjoy a digital detox!
Valuables and guides
Please keep your passport, wallet and other valuables with you. The village host and a Thai guide lead the tour, and Naoto Sakata joins when possible.
